#nowyouknow: The French Riviera

Come relax in the French Riviera like the true “A-lister” you know you are. Enjoy a tasty crepe or gamble in the Monte Carlo Casino like James Bond. The French Riviera has everything to offer the person looking for a perfect weekend of beautiful beaches, wild nightlife, and maybe even the chance to see one of your favorite stars.


  1. The seaside coasts in France are named after precious stones. A quick traverse through could bring you to the mother of pearl coast, alabaster coast and the jade coast and if you are looking for more colorful ones you can find the amethyst coast or the ruby coast!

  3. The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious and oldest film festivals in the world! This glamorous event is usually held every year in the month of May and is attended by everybody who is anybody in the movie industry.
  4. Monaco is the second smallest country in the world, after Vatican City.
  5. Monaco is home to the Monte-Carlo Casino complex that comprises of the Grand theatre de Monte Carlo, an opera and a ballet house.
  6. Three James Bond movies have been filmed inside of the Monte-Carlo Casino.
  7. The South of France is also a pleasure to the nostrils. Honestly, the many hillside towns such as Eze send fragrances to the world. About 26 miles west of Nice, is home to legendary Fragonard, whose 18th century factory is still open to the public
  8. Get your engine revved up. The Monaco Grand Prix is a Formula One motor race held each year since 1929, and is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world.
  9. The promenade des anglais in Nice has become world famous, and sets a perfect tone for a walk along the beautiful coastline.
  10. There are 48 different beautiful sand beaches located in Antibes.

#nowyouknow: Oktoberfest

Everybody knows that Oktoberfest is a once in a lifetime event that simply cannot be missed.  If you are studying abroad in the Fall, this is your chance! Those that have been refer to Oktoberfest as Disneyland for adults due to the most delicious beer in the world served in steins, Bavarian attire, festival rides, pretzels the size of your head and oompa oompa bands.  In case you need more facts to solidify your decision, here you have it: #nowyouknow Oktoberfest style.


  1. Over 7 million liters of beer are sold at the festival. That would be able to fill an Olympic swimming pool more than two times over!
  2. Munich held the first Oktoberfest in 1810 as a giant wedding reception for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Now it serves as a magnificent celebration of beer.
  3. A parade took place at the first Oktoberfest in 1810 in honor of the wedding, and since then has become an annual opening tradition.
  4. Exclamations of “Prost!” can be heard all around the festival in Munich. It’s German for “Cheers!”
  5. Over 6 million people attend Oktoberfest each year, making it the world’s largest festival.
  6. Beer was first served in glass mugs in the year 1892.
  7. Germans and other attendees from around the world can be seen around the festival in typical Bavarian dress: Lederhosen for the guys and dirndls for the ladies, making the festival all the more entertaining.
  8. Since it began, Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times due to disease epidemics, war and other emergencies.
  9. In 1950, the festival began with a tapping of the keg by the Mayor of Munich with the declaration “O’zapft is!” (It’s tapped!) and a 12 gun salute. Since then, it has become tradition.
  10. The Germans refer to those who don’t know their limits, drink too much and pass out as “Bierleichen” (“beer corpses” in German).
